One Small Step ...

The wait is over! NASA has announced America’s renewed commitment to human space flight.  “Today, with the selection of Boeing and SpaceX to be the first American companies to launch our astronauts to the International Space Station, NASA has set the stage for what promises to be the most ambitious and exciting chapter in the history of human spaceflight.” — NASA Administrator Charles Bolden.

SpaceX, the first private company to ferry cargo to the International Space Station will be providing it’s Dragon capsule, while Boeing is offering its CST-100 capsule which uses the Atlas V rocket to deliver the capsule to space.

This announcement is just one small step.  From here, both companies will have to satisfy several certification tests that will be overseen by NASA.  While the first use of these spacecraft to ferry astronauts to the International Space Station is a few years away, hope was expressed by NASA that today would mark not a rebirth of American space flight but the new beginning of simply human space flight.
