Doctor Geek

From the Desk of Doctor Geek

Dr. Scott Viguié (a.k.a. Doctor Geek) holds two doctorate degrees and is an archaeologist, attorney, actor and author. Before his wife will permit him to go back to graduate school, yet again, he will have to promise to move on to something that starts with a "B". As luck would have it, Scott is also the first bionic man. Well, ... not exactly.

In reality, Scott was one of the first to undergo extensive orthopedic surgery to compensate for cerebral palsy. While these cutting edge techniques did in fact grant him the ability to walk, making him better ... stronger ... faster, his new abilities did not in fact come with the cool sound effects. S o began a lifelong obsession with science, technology, and the science fiction that inspires them.

Scott's love of all things science fiction and fantasy can be heard on various podcasts, including Articles of the Shadow Proclamation, Earth Station One, and Earth Station Who. Throughout the year, Scott travels the convention circuit, appearing at such conventions as Dragon*con, Time Lord Fest, and TimeGate, where he can be seen participating in Doctor Who related panels and speaking on such topics as "The Archaeology of Stargate".

Scott established Doctor Geek's Laboratory and Doctor Geek's Science Fair in the hope that it would encourage a rekindled sense of optimism for the future. That it would bring about enthusiasm for innovation. That it would bring the fictional world of tomorrow, one step closer to today.

Scott is also a consultant for the Science & Entertaiment Exchange, a volunteer network based out of Los Angles that connects productions with experts who can add a little science to the fiction.

Just in time for the new Fall schedule, Doctor Geek’s Laboratory returns!  Our second season continues with the conclusion into the investigation into 3D Printers.

This investigation is the perfect example of why we often say, “the future is a moving target”.  A lot has happened in the year since we recorded this interview.  Not only has MakerBot developed beyond the Replicator One, but the people behind The Dreambox have repurposed their 3D printer technology to form the new companyTwindom

If you want to learn more about 3D printing, make sure to check out Madame Oracle’s Maker Faire review

This year you will be able to meet Dr. Scott Viguie, Debbie Viguie, Rita De La Torre and JC De La Torre.

I am proud to announce the release of Tears of Poseidon, the first in a trilogy written by myself and my wife, The New York Times Best Selling Author Debbie Viguie.  While Debbie and I have collaborated before, she provides the voice of Claire on Doctor Geek’s Laboratory of Applied Geekdom, this is the first time we have written a book together.

Fans of my earlier book, Archaeology in Fiction, will recognize the name Tex Ravencroft.  Tex’s diary entries from that novel were the basis of this new adventure, the quest for Atlantis!

Recently, I was approached by the good people at SingleHop to participate in their Geekness Day celebration by providing a little information about how I embrace my Geekness.  So why am I posting this article today and not on the official Geekness Day of July 13th?  Simple, every day is Geekness Day at Doctor Geek’s Laboratory. So what makes Doctor Geek a geek? Well like everyone I have several geekdoms, several fandoms I am very passionate about.  I am such a Highlander fan I even have Highlander the Source in my collection.

What can I say? I am an archivist.  In fact, my video collection is so vast I single handedly could restore the Sci-Fi channel (note I did not say Syfy) and the ME TV channel.  Maybe I should see if the people at SingleHop can set me up with some dedicated servers and a cloud solution for my video server?

Anyway, while I am very proud of my video collection, I am most proud of Doctor Geek’s Laboratory of Applied Geekdom, the audio show that combines science and fiction to explore the future that has not yet come to pass.  I created the show as STEM (Science,Technology, Engineering, and Math) outreach, and I am proud to say homeschooling parents are using the show to supplement their children’s science curriculum.  The success of our show is proof that nothing is impossible, just highly improbable.

So what is next for Doctor Geek’s Laboratory?  Are we resting on our success? Never! As Captain Kirk said, “risk is our business”.  In addition to beginning pre-production on season 3 of the audio show, we will explore the strange new world of live entertainment.  On September 27th 2014 The South Florida Museum is proud to present Doctor Geek’s Science Fair!  This full day expo combines the excitement of a science fiction convention with the fun of a science fair.  In addition to the panels, vendors and exhibitors, students will be participating in our inaugural Applied Geekdom Competition.

I hope everyone has a great Geekness Day! And remember to apply your Geekdom!
