Doctor Geek

From the Desk of Doctor Geek

Dr. Scott Viguié (a.k.a. Doctor Geek) holds two doctorate degrees and is an archaeologist, attorney, actor and author. Before his wife will permit him to go back to graduate school, yet again, he will have to promise to move on to something that starts with a "B". As luck would have it, Scott is also the first bionic man. Well, ... not exactly.

In reality, Scott was one of the first to undergo extensive orthopedic surgery to compensate for cerebral palsy. While these cutting edge techniques did in fact grant him the ability to walk, making him better ... stronger ... faster, his new abilities did not in fact come with the cool sound effects. S o began a lifelong obsession with science, technology, and the science fiction that inspires them.

Scott's love of all things science fiction and fantasy can be heard on various podcasts, including Articles of the Shadow Proclamation, Earth Station One, and Earth Station Who. Throughout the year, Scott travels the convention circuit, appearing at such conventions as Dragon*con, Time Lord Fest, and TimeGate, where he can be seen participating in Doctor Who related panels and speaking on such topics as "The Archaeology of Stargate".

Scott established Doctor Geek's Laboratory and Doctor Geek's Science Fair in the hope that it would encourage a rekindled sense of optimism for the future. That it would bring about enthusiasm for innovation. That it would bring the fictional world of tomorrow, one step closer to today.

Scott is also a consultant for the Science & Entertaiment Exchange, a volunteer network based out of Los Angles that connects productions with experts who can add a little science to the fiction.

The wait is over! NASA has announced America’s renewed commitment to human space flight.  “Today, with the selection of Boeing and SpaceX to be the first American companies to launch our astronauts to the International Space Station, NASA has set the stage for what promises to be the most ambitious and exciting chapter in the history of human spaceflight.” — NASA Administrator Charles Bolden.

SpaceX, the first private company to ferry cargo to the International Space Station will be providing it’s Dragon capsule, while Boeing is offering its CST-100 capsule which uses the Atlas V rocket to deliver the capsule to space.

This announcement is just one small step.  From here, both companies will have to satisfy several certification tests that will be overseen by NASA.  While the first use of these spacecraft to ferry astronauts to the International Space Station is a few years away, hope was expressed by NASA that today would mark not a rebirth of American space flight but the new beginning of simply human space flight.

Just in time for the new Fall schedule, Doctor Geek’s Laboratory returns!  Our second season continues with the conclusion into the investigation into 3D Printers.

This investigation is the perfect example of why we often say, “the future is a moving target”.  A lot has happened in the year since we recorded this interview.  Not only has MakerBot developed beyond the Replicator One, but the people behind The Dreambox have repurposed their 3D printer technology to form the new companyTwindom

I am proud to announce the release of Tears of Poseidon, the first in a trilogy written by myself and my wife, The New York Times Best Selling Author Debbie Viguie.  While Debbie and I have collaborated before, she provides the voice of Claire on Doctor Geek’s Laboratory of Applied Geekdom, this is the first time we have written a book together.

Fans of my earlier book, Archaeology in Fiction, will recognize the name Tex Ravencroft.  Tex’s diary entries from that novel were the basis of this new adventure, the quest for Atlantis!
